ZETRO SOUZA's Metal Blood Runs In The Family
October 9, 2008OSKOREI, the San Francisco Bay Area metal band featuring Cody Souza — the son of former EXODUS/current TENET frontman Steve "Zetro" Souza — on bass, has recruited Cody's 14-year-old brother Nick to play drums for the group. According to a press release, "Nick's hard-hitting style and his will to be successful and his committment to the drums is what gave this talented kid a chance to step up at a young age."
Zetro, who is acting as OSKOREI's manager, said, "I've always known down deep that my kids would want to play metal. I'm just so proud that they both are so talented at such a young age. And I think it's just a matter of time before they are signed and start popping up in magazines. I'm so glad that they can carry on my dreams and make music that crushes."
Stated Nick: "I grew up in a metal household; the support from my family has always been there for me. When the oppurtunity came for me to step into my brother's band, it was a natural progression for me. OSKOREI is influenced by all the bands I have grown up listening to. I am blown away that, being as young as I am, they rated me on my drumming and not age. I've grown up seeing my father on stage, then my brother, and I knew it would be just a matter of time and a [after] lot of practicing, before I could start my musical career. We are looking forward to getting signed, putting out a heavy album and going on the road."
OSKOREI — which means "the furious horde" — was founded in 2003 by band leader Blake Peterson and his then- drummer Corey Lee. At the time they were 16- and 17-year-old high school students (respectively) from Walnut Creek. By 2005, the band had its sound and direction well in hand.
A friend of the band's father grew up with a certain Bay Area thrash metal legend and he promised them to arrange a meeting with Steve "Zetro" Souza. Zetro really liked what he saw, but more importantly, was impressed with what he heard. He decided to take this band under his wing, to help them along, to do whatever he could with his knowledge, contacts, and motivation. At first he got them a couple of shows, then he got VIO-LENCE soundman Mike Anderson to help them record a self-titled demo. When the band started looking for a new bass player, Steve suggested his own son, Cody Souza. The band tried Cody out, and he earned his current spot with his own talent.
